I have a comment on Lemmygrad from 4 hrs ago that doesn’t show up

A recent series of posts from ml to other instances have almost no interaction locally. When viewed remotely, they have higher vote counts (no more comments to compare).

I haven’t extensively looked at the new feed to see if posts are outright missing, but I see the same general pattern spot checking posts that do appear: vote totals much lower than elsewhere, missing comments

i think the image size limit has been reduced some time ago, because of this i've encountered various situations where i had to manually compress images to be able to upload them. i think the size limit is at around 800kb, at least based on my experience. is there a way that images could be compress upon upload to avoid this? i genuiley rather have them look like a blurry mess than to have to edit them manually.

I'm so confused, I don't even know where to ask this stuff. Here are my questions, hopefully it helps others in the future:

1. I see a bunch of different "Lemmy's" here. What are these called? "Flavors" of lemmy? Lemmy "websites"? Lemmy "instances"?

note: I'll call their collective entirety as "Lemmies", for the remainder of the post

2. If I created an account here on lemmy.ml, (obamacares), does that account also exist on other "Lemmies"?

3. Do posts and comments on this Lemmy also exist on other Lemmies?

4. If one happens to be banned from a specific Lemmy instance: does one also get banned from other Lemmies?

5. In case the answers to the past 3 questions was "No": then what is the relationship between the different "Lemmies"?

6. How are those Lemmy websites stored and served? Is it just a machine the person who created the website maintains — or is there more to it? (some kind of decentralized collaborative server pool, or some blockchain stuff, idk)

7. How much "privacy" can I expect inside these Lemmies? For instance, if I talk to some user through dm's, can anyone else see our messages?

8. If I delete a post or comment: is it gone for good — or will it linger for the eternity in some internet server somewhere?

I probably have more questions, but I forgot now.

Has anyone else noticed that some images are not loading?

I've been seeing lemmy.ml short outages or slowdowns all day. Backend issues? Ddos attack? Any idea? Just wondering. Not a huge issue, keep up the generally good work.

I've managed to reach it merely by uploading two JPEG banners and avatars for two communities: ^1 ^2

Considering that the image upload previewer isn't 1:1 with what the website sees, and images cannot be repositioned after upload, this matters.

The acceptance email I got today came from a dreamhost but they are not in your SPF record, lemmy.ml spf record should look like this

{v=spf1 ip4:51.38.185.90 include:netblocks.dreamhost.com include:relay.mailchannels.net include:spf.improvmx.com ~all}

If you are no longer sending mail from 51.38.185.90 or improvmx, those should be removed

The grab the DKIM records

Select Manage websites

Click DNS

Locate this record

and enter it as a TXT value to your nameservers. This is a public key, your mail server signs the emails in the header with a private key so when a recipient receives the mail it is able to decrypt the signature with the public key in DNS validating the mail.

Finally add a DMARC record

_dmarc.lemmy.ml

make it another TXT record with the value "v=DMARC1; p=none"

This doesn't set a dmarc policy for your domain but tells other servers you know what you are doing and lowers the chances that you are sending spam. You can sign up for a dmarc conformance service like mailhardener.com or something and publish their dashboard to see the delivery statistics if you want to move the policy to quarantine or reject which would be the ideal state.

Hi, I'm hosting a private GoToSocial instance, and I'm unable to follow any communities on lemmy.ml because federation_signed_fetch is set to false by default (proof).

I've discussed it with GoToSocial devs, and their stance is that it's a security feature, which should be enabled, and they don't want to support non-standard and non-secure communication.

Lemmy itself seems to have it enabled by default, so I assume it's a local instance setting or something.

Could you please consider enabling it?

I feel like I get far fewer responses to my posts when posted from my .ml account than when posted from my .world account. Is this a thing? Should I switch servers?

I frequently see removed in a lot of posts and comments. I'm guessing there's some kind of filter at work? I checked my Voyager settings and I don't see that I've blocked any words, is this happening server side?

From context, it looks like the censored words are pretty common, and not especially potent, curse words. Is this really necessary?

Hay guise. What is lemmy.ml rule 1 and how do I see the other rules? They're not in the sidebar.

Noob question, but are any major Lemmy instances blocked by lemmy.ml? I checked the blocklist at https://lemmy.ml/instances, but I can't easily tell how big those instances are, or what they're blocked for. I'm guessing we don't federate with NSFW servers and spammers but are there any large communities I'm not seeing?

I noticed that I'm not receiving any new posts from Hexbear since last month. Did we defederate or something?

As federated, I'm subscribed to communities from other instances than lemmy.ml, for example !xmpp@slrpnk.net, !monero@monero.town, !programming@programming.dev, !technology@lemmygrad.ml, and several other ones...

The common thing is that the federated communities are often pretty out of sync with regards to the original ones on their corresponding instances, and that in the best cases, some times I don't think they've even been syncing for quite a while.

I'm wondering if it's a limitation given lemmy.ml can't keep up, given its amount of users and federation, or if it's something that can be looked at...

Can we do something instance wide here?

Every image in every post is very low resolution. If I switch to my alt account in a different instance, the images are full resolution.

This behaviour started after yesterday's downtime. At least that's when I noticed it.

We might have a bit more downtime this week also, as we're testing for a release.

If I navigate to https://lemmy.ml/c/simplex the page behaves as if I'm not logged in (eg. I see the "login" and "signup" at the top-right link instead of my profile).

I visited other communities (including this one I'm posting on) and they seem fine; hard-refreshing the browser doesn't seem to have any effect, nor does logging out of lemmy and authenticating again.

Can someone try and report if it's a bug or some astral conjunction affecting my PC?

As I said in a comment in the original thread, IMO:

• this looks bad ... like an admin punishing the transgender community over a personal spat they're having with one of its prominent members.
• probably could have and should be dealt with much better
• and, arguably, is an example of an admin action that is in transgression of the instance rules against bigotry/transphobia

They all/mostly seem to be server errors (AFAICT). And I'm pretty sure they started up after the update to 19.5 (from 19.4).
