Well Actually,

Spoons don't typically arc, if at all, in microwave. It has to do with the proximity to other bits of metal that will allow it to arc across, such as the prongs on a fork or the folds in metal foil.

Yours Truly,

Well Actually (formerly known as, Scam Likely)

(Sorry for the random Dungeons & Daddies reference)

Absolutely. This is why when you are microwaving a cup of water to boil it, microwaves will usually recommend having a spoon in the glass of water. It will prevent explosive boiling but also won't be an issue as there's no other metal to arc to.

However the meme does specifically say spoons in plural, so there would be other pieces of metal for it to arc to

ElectroBoom did a video on metal in microwaves and found that smooth objects don't really do much; but if it has a lot of weird angles or sharp edges, it is more likely to generate sparks. The proximity of other metal objects was something he tested, too, and there was no consistency in it.

I've put a lot of metal stuff in the microwave. I am an engineer, so I guess I understand all that electro magnetic nonsense, but honestly, I just don't give a shit. I can confirm it's pretty much magic inside there and lucky things make sparks. We'll need to smash spoons in a collider to unlock the fundamental particles inside cutlery that determine whether it will make sparks in the microwave or not.
