I think it’s kind of the same thing we saw with Kobe Bryant.

RBG was instrumental in a lot of legal wins for women’s rights and also was a very prominent, powerful woman in a male-dominated profession.

But there’s also a lot of shitty things about her that the people who lionize her don’t want to hear.

It's not quite the same thing as Kobe, because the mountains of people lionizing Kobe at least generally understand the broad strokes of his career and accomplishments. I guarantee you that the majority of the people stanning RBG right now have basically no understanding of her jurisprudence beyond that it has some nonspecific connection to women's rights. People generally aren't drawing a balance sheet on things she's actually done, as much as viewing her in the context of the web of associations that is Dem Party partisanship.

It's really the same thing you see with Kamala and Hillary. It's the extreme conclusion to the idea that these members of government represent you. It's that they don't just represent you, they are you. So libs develop this strong imprint on these people. They don't care about what the person has done because that has nothing to do with why they're so liked.
