I can't help but feel that a lot of this is deliberate, the end result of decades of dismantling the public education system to further divide kids into the upper class in private schools, religious fundamentalists in home schooling, and everyone else abandoned to keep the population uneducated and in worse economic precarity.
Somebody please tell me that the kids are alright 
My mother would talk to me all the time at how she has to correct high schools students on basic punctuation and teach them the difference between a simile and metaphor almost constantly
Students trying and failing to understand the difference between similes and metaphors seems to be a very time-honored tradition, tbh
Tbh that's one of those things that doesn't matter at all, people know how to use both of them and it doesn't matter what we call it
