There is only one correct answer: stop using Facebook

after years of saying this, i gave up. people have integrated facebook into their lives to the degree that saying "delete facebook" is pretty much the same as saying "cut your own balls off." they won't do it, no matter if they even acknowledge facebook sucks and is a waste of time. that's rare, though. usually it's "i can't leave facebook, i would lose contact with everyone!" same shit with twitter, instagram, ticktock, snapchat--all that bullshit

The reality is you only lose contact with people who don't matter enough anymore. When I left around 15 years ago I reached out to those I wanted to keep in touch with and made sure I had their number. Anyone else if they looked hard enough could find me elsewhere if they wanted, or already had means to contact me directly. Most did not.

But guess what? My relationships with people are deeper. It's been wildly positive for me. The only issue I had at the time was missing out on events from acquaintances, but that's not an issue anymore with alternative apps

For me, gradually gathering other contacts methods for my close friends and family. And then eventually permanently delete Facebook -- no need for data or whatever, it was mostly garbage anyways.

Same process with changing email providers.

You will be locked out of your local community without Facebook. I’ve been off it for over a decade but needed to get rid of a couch without paying $150 to do it and Facebook was 10 minutes and it’s gone. But a couch is one thing. Anything local requires Facebook.

what's the $150 to get rid of a couch for? just drive it to the landfill

or call salvation army/goodwill/habitat for humanity-- they'll come get whatever

Landfill doesn't take it for free. It's probably $50 and maybe borrow a trailer and a vehicle with a hitch.

again, i give up. use facebook, because life can't be lived without it

Nah. I mean I’m off Facebook and own a trailer. I'm actually on your side I'm just trying to be realistic. $150 is too high unless you have to hire a company to haul it away.

You can totally leave Facebook. My wife is still on it but I think she doesn't use it as much. It's dying, just far too slowly.

It's the same way everyone talks about how dating apps suck and it's ruined dating, etc. But what is the real alternative?

But what is the real alternative?

    Go out and meet people?

I get what you're saying, and to a certain extent you are correct, but where do you go to meet people when all the people you might meet are sitting at home swiping their phone screen?

No they do have a point. How are you to meet people with similar interests, if your similar interests are "Enjoys staying at home and being cozy all day"

if that's your only interest in life you do not need a partner

Well aren't you just a quite sad person. No one should ever be lonely in life. There are plenty of people who would be quite happy with being able to share that interest, regardless of how difficult it might be to find someone with similar interests.

I was also being vague on purpose, for instance, while my interests are simply being cozy at home, it includes doing many many things at home, but that don't require me to go out. Online dating doesn't solve this either. It's very rare to meet someone in close proximity to you as well, so if that's a route you want, you might want to be comfortable moving.

for telling people to go outside and meet others instead of buring their faces in their phones and pretend loneliness and dating apps are their only choice? ok, bud

  • I married a very nice girl last month. We met at work 5 years ago.

We need to figure out how to rebuild social relations without the Internet. Otherwise the billionaire class will control access to the opposite gender. For the sake of humanity, go be nice to a stranger.

It’s the same way everyone talks about how dating apps suck and it’s ruined dating, etc. But what is the real alternative?

dating apps are different in that you're specifically using it to get a date, instead of trying to make your life look more fun/happy/glamorous than that of your "friends". once you meet someone and start a relationship, the app served its purpose and (in theory) you stop using it. i've never used a dating app, but i can see the value in them for people who are looking for specific less-than-common traits in a partner-- if you're asexual (for example) and looking for someone who's the same, then an app might be the only way you can find that someone. the alternative is go out looking on your own every day until you happen across whatever specific thing you're looking for by chance, which may never happen.

I remember when the backlash to Xitter was pretty high, culturally. I asked why our company was still using Xitter.

Crickets. And even after he gave the Nazi salute, still no change.

The answer is - "that's where everyone is". They aren't wrong. The network effect sucks.

Meh. “That’s where everyone is” it’s more like that’s where all the bots and algorithmic gatekeeping are. I get way more engagement on mastodon than I ever did on twitter post-2012 algorithm shakeup. Before the algorithmic censorship, I got lots of engagement on twitter. But that twitter hasn’t existed for a long time. When I got on mastodon it was like oh. The algorithm is the entire problem. No wonder OWS and the Arab spring were so big. No wonder the algorithms came after them.

Yeah, it depends on the engagement you are after. Companies are after where all the people are. Not sure if they even care if it's being propped up by bots and trolls.

Also, companies mostly all just do what other companies do - another network effect. If going on Bluesky or something like Mastodon is not something all the other companies are doing, they won't.

I mean, better Facebook marketplace than buying new. Marketplace has basically entirely replaced Craigslist for buying used stuff, it's really the only game in town. If they only use it for the marketplace, things could be worse.

    You're preaching deaf ears.

FB Marketplace has crushed all alternatives in many places. But find one where's that's not the case, and be sure someone there is going to lecture you on how THEY don't need it therefore YOU shouldn't use it, or they never buy/sell anything second hand online, but they absolutely know how you should do that how you shouldn't do that, without proposing any alternative whatsoever.

I remember the glorious time when beginners seeking help on Linux were getting answers such as "it works on my machine" or "you don't need to do that, I don't , instead I do blablabla". Same vibe.

Are you crazy? Everyone should support a soul-stealing anti-minority fascist bank that exists to fund a child-raping criminal dictator- all so they have conveniently buy and sell piles of junk they won’t give a shit about in another year!

… dude. You won’t ever justify supporting this shit.

Shit man, you never seen The Good Place? You can't do anything without hurting a lot of people. Whatever device you're using right now to make your point definitely involved slave labor somewhere in the supply chain, likely child slave labor. Take a bow, you're hurting a lot of people.

Or, y'know, take a nuanced approach like an adult.

You enjoy selling all your junk bud. I hope it’s worth the people that suffer for it.
