Today’s game is Spliner Cell Chaos Theory. Ages ago someone recommended it to me and I picked it up. I don’t remember who it was, but if you’re seeing this, seriously. Thank you. Legit one of the best purchases I’ve made in a while.

Honestly, playing this, I can tell what elements would later go into Assassin’s Creed, which is where I’m coming at it from. But also having played MGS3 earlier this year, I’m also viewing it from that lens.

I love how interactable the environment is. Like. Obviously it’s not some hyper interactive game. But like the generators? I can flip it off, which I assume leaves it open for enemies to turn it back on, or I can sabotage it which takes longer but gives me more darkness to work with.

My favorite instance of this is stabbing out the generator in the tent area in the first level, then when the guy comes to check it out I snaked around and took him out with a choke hold. It was incredibly satisfying to pull off.

The first level was the only one I did but it took me nearly an hour to finish, partly because I was figuring out controls but also I was trying to get a grasp on the stealth. I ended up getting the hang of it and getting out with only getting seen twice, which is a positive in my book.

Overall I’m really liking it. It’s aged in some ways but it’s still really good. I just need to get a grasp on the controls and then I’ll be good.

Me, it was me who recommended it! I'm so glad you're enjoying it! Obviously some elements of it will feel slightly dated, but honestly for a 2005 (!) game I think it has aged incredibly well. It even looks quite good considering it's age (especially if you can crank the rendering resolution a bit).

CT really is the pinnacle of the series - on top of having perfected the gameplay and level design after the first two games they also also found a really nice tone in the writing, with some fun dialogue between both Sam and the crew as well as during various interrogations (or just Sam dry comments). And they hadn't yet gone off the rails with more "story heavy" attempts like Double Agent and Conviction.

Plus the soundtrack absolutely bangs.

I thought it might have been you! I didn’t want to assume and make a fool of myself though.

I think with the dated elements, it’s a lot like Max Payne or something like that. It’s awkward at first. But once you get the hang of it it really feels intuitive.

My only complaint was it was hard to get my PS3 Controller to play nice with it. And even then for some reason Circle is the action button which is throwing me off. And it’s hard to fault it for that because of the age and afaik nothing really plays well with PS3 controllers back then.

I was kind of worried I wouldn’t care for Sam, but honestly he’s kind of grown on me.

Absolutely loved the soundtrack too. The one that played when first booting it up for me was great

Sam is honestly a great character. I'm still so sad we never got a final sendoff game for him with Michael Ironside back after he beat cancer. I really feel like there could have been a cool game there, ending with the death of Sam. Not that I would trust modern Ubi to make it, mind.
