assuming you have a public transit system that operates at night, and is worth a damn.

I know there are places where buses stop running long before the bars close.

Okay, maybe you should lobby your local government for better public transport? Because let's be honest with you, you can't have a healthy nightlife without public transport at night.

If the patrons of bars and clubs only have the option to drive to your location and drive back, they're either not going to drink as much as they would, not going to visit as often because they're going to have to drop stacks on a cab, or they're going to drink and drive.

You can't have a healthy nightlife without public transport at night. The only places that I can think of if I can get away with having no public transport and having some form of nightlife are wee villages, because you can walk home.

If you want a healthy nightlife, invest in public transport. If you don't want to invest in public transport, prepare to spend your nights drinking alone in your house.

Thats on the base assumption that your local municipality wants a healthy nightlife.

Which is a brave assumption to make.

A city not wanting to have a healthy nightlife, to me, is a bit like a city not wanting to have shops: it's a royally stupid position to make.

The nighttime economy is hella important to any city because it's a big money spinner. Here you have a load of people who either have finished work or have the weekend off and they're looking for shit to do that isn't staring at the TV drinking tinnies they bought on the way home from work and they wanna go out to bars with their friends, or to a restaurant, or a show. Those bars, clubs, restaurants, theaters and take outs make money and pay tax which the city can use for shit they need. Oh, and those Pubs? They can act as community nexuses, so there's a fucking social benefit too. The idea of a city having no nightlife is genuinely a dumber idea than when they turned cities into car centric hellholes, and that was a very dumb idea that most cities are struggling to deal with even now.

Want to know how universal nightlife is? Cultures that don't drink have nightlife. Muslim countries have night markets and cafes because it's almost a universal thing that after work, at night, people wanna hang out and do things. Even before civilization we used to gather round fires to listen to stories and shit, that's how universal it is.

I have been to villages with nightlife, several pubs where locals and visitors alike go to have a drink or maybe see live music. I have been to hamlets with a pub open until 11 where people go to vibe with a pint. Hell, even dormtowns I have been to have at least one watering hole. If your authorities are fighting against nightlife, then they are ultra-authoritarian asshats who hate money and human joy.

But public transport won't make a handful of people rich, so that's a non starter for many.

And you might have to reckon with living in a society, with other kinds of people. You'd really ask someone to ride a bus with a {slur of your choice} just sitting there, like they're entitled to peace and dignity?

In other words, conservatives are fuck heads who make the world worse for stupid reasons.

    Edit: fix autocorrect mistake

Yes, but also not a big fan of oppressive religious dress codes.

Good news: you don't have to ascribe to an oppressive religious dress code. The people that do want to dress in ways that conform to their religious and cultural beliefs can, and that continues to have fuck-all to do with you.

What about the ones who don't want to, but are forced into it?

What about people pushing/forcing their partner into wearing more revealing clothes than they are comfortable in? Or just otherwise controlling it. Sure, abuse like that should be illegal (it often already is, although enforcement is usually terrible) and there needs to be support for people to get out of bad situations. But you'd never see those cases because they're not visibly other from you in the same way.

That’s not okay, which is why where are not and should not be any laws in our country regarding what to wear, what to read, what you are allowed to do with your body (as long as it doesn’t violate someone else’s or force them into violent, gory, or sexual situations)

You hearing this, Christians? The USA isn’t here for you to make puritanical.

The ones forced into it, I pity. In my area, it's fairly common to see a women (and girls) out in the park in full religious garb, while their husband is in sweatpants and flip-flops. It definitely makes me angry. I honestly don't think anyone chooses to dress like this unless they are forced to by a man.

In general I think we need to look to what feminists from similar cultural backgrounds to this say we should do and amplify their voices. I really don't want to get into a position where many of them see feminism as at odds with their culture, religion, and other beliefs. It's an ideology that must adapt to a culture in order to serve as a liberatory force within it

I see this sometimes from a distance, even with children. The boys are wild and loose, the girls on a tight leash.

Unfortunately, trying to address that with the sledgehammer of The State is not easy to do safely.

Public transit stops at midnight where I live. Won’t work for someone out at 2am.

In the U.S. there are only two places that serve alcohol 24/7 (New York and Las Vegas). Pretty much everywhere else stops serving at 2am

Big difference between serving alcohol and selling alcohol. When I was doing 3rd shift, we'd get out at 5AM, head straight for the gas station, and pour tallboys into paper cups and drink in front of the store.

First bus home came by at 6:30. I was usually pretty buzzed by then.
