And this reaction was why I was VERY quickly used to British tourists either tipping nothing or giving me literally a dollar when I served tables and did room service at an international restaurant

something unique about the British apparently given every other European nationality would tip appropriately

    I think tipping in the UK isn't super common. One waiter actually said so when we were giving a ~10% tip customary where I'm from. Most waiters just said thank you.

    I thought they were closer to the US. In so many ways the UK feels closer to the US than to Europe.

    My understanding is tipping is only really a thing in the U.S. but all the germans and french and Spaniards etc figured it out

    It's fairly common across Europe. But not as high and not as a defacto mandatory part of the transaction.

    In some small rural towns people might get pissed at you for tipping because it's seen as the guest acting as an aristocrat or something.
