yapLet's say we have some periodic function f. The goal is to represent it as a bunch of sine waves. This is called a Fourier series (FS).

The FS coefficients are given by

            ⌠2⋅π
         1 ⎮ -i⋅k⋅x
f̂(k) = ─── ⎮ f(x)⋅e dx
        2⋅π ⌡0

for whole numbers k. We can then approximate the original function with

  n
 ___
 ╲ -i⋅k⋅x
 ╱ f̂(k)⋅e
 ‾‾‾
k = -n

and make the approximation better by making n larger.

For non-periodic functions, we can still get an approximation! The Fourier Transform (FT) uses a continuous range of frequencies instead of whole numbers, and the sum is replaced by an integral (the inverse FT).

FT's are used everywhere, for example in signal processing and spectroscopy. If a recording contains an annoying high-pitched noise, we can apply the FT and filter the unwanted frequencies. Spectroscopy separates light into its different wavelengths. By comparing the resulting spectral lines with known measurements, we can determine which elements and molecules are present in stars and planets, for example.

idk what more to add ._.

It took my partner something like 3 years, and they've finally found a name they're happy with and it was worth the waiting. I don't think it could've really been rushed either, as there was a lot of self growth involved in the process as well. The new name is perfect and fits so much better than their deadname. So, don't give up, I know you'll find the perfect one one day.

    oooaaaaaaauhhh

Seriously though I appreciate the genuine support/advice. I was mostly just lightly venting but it's really nice to hear other people's experiences. I've always been resistant to change just generally so I know that's my biggest hurdle honestly. Change is hard, but I want to be different so I guess I have to figure it out sometime

Change is hard for me too, which is part of the reason I'm just going to stubbornly cling to my name for all time. I've toyed with the idea of getting a more feminine spelling, but I doubt I will. Though I guess I also feel that mine fits, and I know what not fitting feels like cause my first name DOES NOT and that shit does got to go as soon as I come up with a new middle name which I have not been able to do.

Ha, great minds think alike. Dang, I hadn't even considered a new middle name! I'm not really planning to legally change my name so hopefully I can just continue to avoid it lol. The combination of the names is making it way harder though for sure, a few decent ones just sound weird paired with my surname.

I think part of my problem is that I'm not totally repulsed by my current first name, it just doesn't feel like me. Like even calling it a deadname seems like I'm overblowing it or stealing valor. I think that's part of why any new name isn't going to immediately jump out at me the way I'm expecting/hoping
