The base is dovetailed at the corners and the uprights are lapped in. I have to complicate everything.

I've never tried dovetails, I could only hope to do as well. I'd probably just do a corner brace and call it done, though.

Same here! The wood is thick and really wet right from the hardware store. I cut the joinery using panel saws because the teeth of my back saws were too fine. It came out pretty good, even if it's utilitarian.
