Chat is a text only community for casual conversation, please keep shitposting to the absolute minimum. This is intended to be a separate space from c/chapotraphouse or the daily megathread. Chat does this by being a long-form community where topics will remain from day to day unlike the megathread, and it is distinct from c/chapotraphouse in that we ask you to engage in this community in a genuine way. Please keep shitposting, bits, and irony to a minimum.
As with all communities posts need to abide by the code of conduct, additionally moderators will remove any posts or comments deemed to be inappropriate.
Thank you and happy chatting!

I do think it's a shining embodiment of capitalism, a lot of Americans I've met are exceptionally gregarious and at the same time being extremely resistant to budging their mind. I don't see much of a creative drive usually, it's mostly about consuming stuff and discussing how you feel about things. There isn't much of a material incentive to learn, so people don't...
Conversation also serves as a form of commodity, networking, you speak because you want something not because of the speech itself. You don't want to offend people, because it ruins your potential business opportunities - so it's best to keep the conversation shallow and simplistic. Over time this has become a subconscious feature of the culture itself where being anti-intellectual is the norm.
It conveniently also makes it much easier to control people, because the assumption is that if you're an important looking person with a big crowd, in front of a podium, well you must know what you're talking about.
