I need a pull up station, NOT a pull up bar, because I plan on doing bodyweight dead lifts in the middle of summer AND winter and jungle gyms just dont cut it in the fall and winter obviously. Im only 5’9 and Im in toronto if that helps.

Any ideas please? Could I just go to like a landfill and pick up some discarded metal bars and like get them welded together? Or do I just buy one of those big coat racks and remove the wheels on the legs and weld on a steel platform for each of the legs??

Thanks to anyone who answers.

Edit: oh sorry forgot to add that I live in an apartment so I cant screew in anything cause its illegal . also those pull up bars that use thresholds to stay put are also not enough for me because I plan on doing some absolutely looney stuff on that pull up station lol.

and by Bodyweight Deadlifts I mean this: https://m.youtube.com/shorts/SjqhGRQcMJE

I also plan on doing this: https://m.youtube.com/shorts/EVCeuFlBRHc though I have no idea what the exercise is called but FlexyDave showed it to me and I fell inlove with it. And Ill even be swinging while Im upside down like that. AND Ill be doing abdominal curls or 'upside down sit-ups' (if thats what theyre called) as Im upside down like that.

And Muscle Ups.

I want to respect your ability to make descisions for yourself. But my advice:

  1. Open your mind to doing exercises that achieve the same goals with different equipment. Eg, you can increase effective pull up weight by switching to assisted one arms, then one arms, rather than stacking on increasingly huge numbers of plates. There is no such thing as the magical, perfect exercise - they all work about as well, unless you are competing in Mr Olympia. Pick the one that is most convenient for you and the equipment you have.
1.1) I would also say - I don't want to doubt your commitment nor your current fitness level. But I notice you said you plan to do insane shit on this pull up bar. A far faster and cheaper solution could be a $10 used doorframe pull up bar that you use until you outgrow it. A solution doesnt have to be perfect forever for it to be perfect right now.
  2. Scope out the municipal gyms near you, and look into financial aid programs. A gym with a simple barbell or dumbbell set, plus a pull up bar, is really all you need. Or if it is full of machines, that is great, too. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
2.1) I will note that while I can imagine you putting togther a free standing pull up bar for next to no money using salvaged materials, I think you will find that achieving sufficient stability, durability, and load bearing capacity will be a bit of a feat of engineering. If you are trying to do, like, weighted kipping pull ups or muscle ups or something, the dynamic, non-vertical forces could quickly make your joints unstable via the large torsional forces you would be putting on the base. Making a truly resiliant free standing pull up bar is going to be much easier for someone who buys their materials new, uses good tools (like miter saws and hole saws, which are expensive), and who has a decent amount of carpentry experience under their belt - and doing it this way, even if you manage to borrow the most expensive tools, you can still expect materials to cost a couple hundred bucks with the price of lumber these days. A municipal gym membership, otoh, is probably like $15/mo.
2.2) Same with buying dumbbells. Expect iron to cost between $1-2/lb. While building a functional home gym is a noble goal, a cheap commercial gym is often a better value.
2.3) One more point on the gym and then I'll shut up, which is that I, personally, like gyms because they help me stay consistent with my training by putting it somewhere other than my home - so if I can motivate to go to the gym, I will get my workout in. Versus at home, I tend to be far more likely to procrastinate, since the option is always available. Plus, good gyms often have a social aspect that can be enjoyable.
  3. You should find a different place to live asap. These kinds of landlords are, like, literal slumlords. Their whole ploy is to rent to someone they think has no other options so they will never complain or move out, then nickle and dime them as much as they possibly can. I would start reading up on landlord-tenant law, start documenting issues that you see, and get in contact with a lawyer (many will do free consultations to give you advice on your situation). If you have proof of issues of habitation, you can pay a lawyer, like, $50 to write a letter on their letterhead to your landlords saying you'll sue them if they don't let you break your lease and give you your full deposit back.
3.1) Seriously, you're getting scammed. I know you are grateful to have any roof over your head, but that is exactly how people like this will exploit you. If you put the legwork in, you can find a place that is as cheap or nearly as cheap without shitbag landlords - and a landlord that charges more up front but doesnt nickle and dime you will probably leave you ahead financially.
3.2) If you won't do it for your pocketbook or quality of life, do it for your gainz. Inhaling mold spores results in systemic inflammation, which decreases sleep quality and recovery.

To be completely honest I mostly do these things not for gainz anymore but mostly for mental health. I would highly recommend that anyone who is able to and who is saddened or depressed right now, go and find a thing, ANYTHING, that you csn safely hang upside down of and then go hang upside down for like the next 10 or more minutes collectively.... Its like a .... temporary portal to heaven away from this sad, sad, lonely world we live in when you do it. I cant explain it. Same thing with cardio. I dont care at all for my cardiovascular health since I am bulking and trying to GAIN fat but my 'self-deleting' thoughts disappear when Im in the middle or at the end of a 75 minute HIIT workout. And Im sure that is how that would work for most other people who are saddened . (Im not saying either of these things will cure your depression since there isnt a cure to clinical depression obviously. but I would strongly recommend both as temporary treatments) . Thats why I wanna be hanging so much. NOTHING has treated my mental health problems in the past 10 years better than just hanging on a bar whether upside down or upright. My therapist even said : "You might as well do it as much as you want since it makes you happy and you arent hurting anyone else when you do it." So....

Im not even joking, I dont care if you use USD , AUD, British Pounds or CAD, I also dont care if you start talking about thermodynamics , chemical physics or materials sciences, I also dont care if you have to write up a whole PhD thesis or something to communicate this but I actually want you to get into the specifics of this scenario as thoroughly as you can please cause now you have me curious. Are you actually telling me it really is impossiblly expensive to find a couple of full steel lightly used bars then just pay to have them cut down then screw them tightly then glue them together with construction glue or putty? They dont eve. have to be perfect bars , they just have to be 'good enough'

Truthfullt speaking Im so broke right now that I live with my parents and the rental market and housing market in canada has given me so much anxiety just hearing about it I dont even want to begin researching it or the laws around it. I will if I have to . But if I dont ? Meeeh Fuck it

If you have a citation or a study that shows this PLEASE send it cause wtf? Ive had seriously bad insomnia since I was very young but Ive always lived in moldy apartments and something tk note about this apartment is how awful the ventilation is. I remember someone smoked in the apartment and then I left wuth them to go somewhere and I left the windows open and came back like 3 hours later. ...and it STILL smelled like burnt tobacco...

Also about the gym, 1. I have a general disdain for most people in general sadly. Im not mad at most people I just want to stay away from people. So I try to spend as much time as possible away from all other people. Its hard to explain here and its just how I am. I have barely changed in the 31 years of my life. Maybe Im autistic or something I havent received an official diagnosis yet but I do have ADHD. 2. is I actually procrastinate MORE at the gym than I do at home or at a park. I move at my own pace when Im alone and when I workout and I dont want anybody to tell me to hurry up or slow down, or to interfere with what Im doing unless they want me to give them a few pointers or lessons on things they see me doing. If I do the very stiff version of the splits that Im currently capable of doing cause Im trying to learn how to do the full splits wouldnt that be kinda awkward to do at a gym? Also loud environments with a lot of people just dont work for me. 3. Im a cheapskate , like disturbingly so. If I can get by by ONLY eating ground beef and never having to eat steak cause steak is more expensive? YOure damned right Ill be eating the ground beef and never once buying steak. Ive been eating the same meal for 5 years straight everyday simply because it saves me money. Ive become allergic to paying for entertainment kr paying for restaurants or paying for anything even. I had to walk almost 10 km back home cause the bus on my route broke down with 5 kg of groceries. I could have called a cab... I just walked it lol. Im only a cheapskate cause I need to save money to go go to university 4. I plan on spending about 30 minutes to 2 hours a day of EVERY DAY MINIMUM hanging off a bar in some type of way whether that be upside down or uptright and it would be more convenient to just have the bar 'right there' in the apartment rather than having to trudge through the fucking annoying 2.5 feet fucking snow that gets in the way here to go to a gym that may have a dozen people all waiting to use the pull up bars. And obviously using the bars outside in the cold is just not a good idea....now that I think about it I wonder about just buying VERY good winter gloves and doubling them then putting very grippy gloves over all those gloves , then just goimgnto the local jungle gyms and calisthenics workout areas in the city and just doing that during the winter . In the summer , which it is here right now, I just go to the park which is about a 1km walk away from the aprtment and I use the jungle gyms there if I dont see any children or skunks around.
