Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

Brain damage does not make someone a bad person. People with disabilities can still be politicians. His issue isn’t his disability but his cruel world view.
I don't want to be perceived as saying ableism is ok because that's not what I'm saying, also I didn't read the removed comment and this has nothing to do with whatever that said, but, uh, technically yeah brain damage absolutely can make you a "bad person" at least in terms of causing negative behaviors that otherwise wouldn't be there or intensifying ones that are
like iirc the university of texas tower shooter in the 60s left a note requesting an autopsy because he himself didn't understand his own violent urges, they autopsied him and found a tumor pressing on his amygdala
then there's, you know, all the football players with chronic trauma who have all kinds of issues
I guess in the end it still doesn't make anyone a "bad" person because that's a moral judgment on issues that are ultimately out of their control
I understand and there are several ways to interpret the sentence “brain damage does not make someone a bad person”. I agree that it can contribute to harmful behaviour in a similar way that stress does. But brain damage is not how you measure how someone is a bad or even incompetent person, you measure by their actions. When we’re talking about the horrible politics of someone with brain damage I find it ableist to focus on the brain damage instead of the bad politics.
I never said brain damage makes him a bad person. I was saying he does not have the cognitive capacity to serve as a senator. But yeah his worldview makes him a shitty person. I dont necessarily believe his shitty worldview is related to the fact that he clearly has brain damage. The two things are not mutually exclusive
Mitch McConnell has a shitty worldview. I would never vote for the guy. But thats unrelated to the fact that he is not in a capable state to serve as a senator, which is a distinctly different reason I wouldnt vote for him. Same as the fact that hes older than dirt. Being old doesnt make you a bad person, hes just old and a bad person. The two things dont have to have anything to do with each other. Ive seen Fetterman myself and the guy is definitely not all there, and also he has a shitty worldview. Having met the guy I wouldnt even say he is a bad person. I think he is a confused person who is easily taken advantage of by significantly worse people. Not that it excuses his votes or newfound beliefs, but still
If anything I believe those two very different things are separate issues that voters have with him, to the point where there is bipartisan support for replacing him with literally anyone else
Nobody needs to be so fucking smart. Otherwise people would care about not catching covid, Wich does cause brain damage. But they don't. Because being a bit dumber won't affect their ability to work or enjoy life.

He and Lindsey Graham have had stellar records recently. I haven't heard them advocate for war in a while.
