Reminds me of how I reimagined sirens for a worldbuilding project, inspired by reading about how desertion has been endemic to human armies since antiquity.
Short version: siren song doesn't mind control, it heals and soothes, and Greek soldiers on overseas campaigns found it so enticing that they would desert and live a chill life in the sirens' cozy coastal villages, where they would garden and the sirens would provide the animal protein by fishing. The portrayal of sirens in The Odyssey was a state propaganda maneuver meant to poison the well against them.
Damn, it really is just always the same trick. "Don't listen to them, they have received cursed input and become mindless!"
