For people who pay extra to buy clothing that features brand logos, why? (lemmy.world)

I’ve never really understood the appeal of paying more for a shirt just because it has a brand like Nike or Adidas or something with another brand that sells a product printed across it when a plain, unbranded one costs less.

If you think about it, walking around wearing a giant logo is basically acting as a walking billboard for that company. Usually, if a company wants to advertise on a billboard, they have to pay for the space. But with branded clothes, people not only provide the advertising space for free, they actually pay extra for the privilege.

It feels a bit backwards to me. For those of you who prefer branded clothing, what makes it worth the extra cost for you?

Edit: I'm not speaking of sports equipment. Just clothing you would wear to the movies, the store, etc.

To the people saying it sends the signal “I can afford to buy name brand clothes” in my expeirence of this it more often signals try hards who can’t actually afford the brand but do it to give the impression that they can.

In my own experience in Europe, expensive visibly branded goods (especially luxury) are worn/carried by people trying to look wealthy who are no such thing or the nouveau riche (people who have become well of but did not grow up well-off).

The actual rich people wear high quality stuff with no highly visible branding.

Yeah, shit kills me. Like those Burberry trenches that are plaid all over. It's like they said to themselves; "Someone occasionally seeing a little flash of plaid lining isn't good enough! Everyone within 100 meters needs to know I can afford Burberry!" Those people are usually the least likely to actually be able to afford to dress that way consistently, and/or have the worst taste.

When brands start offering shit like that, it makes me much less likely to buy anything from them. It just cheapens everything they make by association. I'm even thinking I shouldn't use Burberry as an example because their cachet has been reduced so much in my mind with the way they have catered to people like this in recent years.

True wealth is fairly quiet, just look how understated a Birkin bag is. No big logo, no patterned proprietary fabric. To me the posturing of luxury brand names in everyday aesthetic is very much a pissing contest/visual flex by people who dont understand that the really luxury shit is from places that make you wait to be invited before you can even buy it

Not saying I love any of that mess, I detest the concept of "upper class" vs "lower class" like that and I think 20,000 for a handbag is stupid when that's someones college tuition but that is my observation.

The one Asian store that I love is where I get my backpacks from. No idea what the brand is but it held up to flooded tent on a camping trip. 12$
