Rules:
- The mods are fallible; if you've been banned or had a post/comment removed, please appeal.
- Off-topic posts will be removed. If you don't know what "Leopards ate my Face" is, try reading this post.
- If the reason your post meets Rule 1 isn't in the source, you must add a source in the post body (not the comments) to explain this. If the reason is in the source but is tedious to find (e.g. in a lengthy video), you must add an explanation for where it is.
- Posts should use high-quality sources (for a rough idea, check out this list), and posts should retain the title (if one exists) from works like news articles, videos, etc. You may (but need not) edit your post if the source changes the title. (If you're only using an excerpt from an article that's otherwise not about LAMF, you can use the quote in the title.) Other types of posts should have a title which accurately, relatively neutrally describes their contents.
- For accessibility reasons, an image of text must either have alt text or a transcription in the post body.
- Reposts within 1 year or the Top 100 of all time are subject to removal. Within moderator discretion, this doesn't just include reposts of the exact same media but also includes e.g. a secondary source telling basically the exact same story as another that was already posted.
- This is not exclusively a US politics community. You're encouraged to post stories about anyone from any place in the world at any point in history as long as you meet the other rules.
- All Lemmy.World Terms of Service apply.

So basically the CDU are the German equivalent to log cabin Republicans? Explains a lot.
That’s exactly what they are—and they’re almost just as corrupt and just as dishonest. Spahn shamelessly enriched himself during his time in office. The fact that he now has to resign because of this "scandal" is, of course, beyond ridiculous, but hey, at least he has to go.
Yeah, it kind of sounds like he lied, screwed over tax payers, stole a bunch of money, and now gets to retire with a pension, and a heap of stolen money so he can raise the kid he's not even capable of having naturally. Sound about right?
Yes, he will probably never be prosecuted for his crimes. Although Germany is, for the most part, a functioning constitutional state, it is unfortunately still very rare for a politician to be prosecuted for embezzling public funds.
Ah, what are but some face masks among friends 😁
He is still a member of parliament, so not totally gone unfortunately... like gone to prison, which would be just. So basically he did a bunch of shit, with no consequences, and only lost a job, probably only temporarily, for an issue not even illegal but against party policy.
Well, in terms of hypocrisy maybe. In terms of policy, they are more similar to moderate Democrats.
They are just a few years behind. Soon they will cooperate with the far-right AfD to cling to power, then get chewed up and shit out again. Just like MAGA took over the Republican party with former Republicans all kissing Trumps ass, all the corrupt CDU goons will happily embrace fascism when it keeps them in power to keep fucking over the population for their billionair masters.
I don't think it's that black-and-white. Multi-party systems have a different dynamic than two-party systems. For one, multi-party systems favour moderates, while two-party systems lead to greater polarization. It just so happens that racism and fascism are very popular and mainstream nowadays. In the other European multi-party systems where fascists entered government, it didn't lead to a complete takeover as did happen in the Republican Party.
