Reminds me of grade school teachers replying with "I DUNNO, CAN YOU?" when asked "can I go to the bathroom?"
This is basically my middle school
They locked all the bathrooms and you had to have a teacher escort you there and back or you'd be nabbed by a security guard and get in trouble
Keep in mind, these are the same teachers who had to teach, which basically meant you couldn't go to the bathroom unless you were on your way to lunch
I still remember holding it for a full eight hours once because we had a substitute and she was not given a bathroom key
By comparison, my high school was the exact opposite and I was just agog at the fact that I was being treated with respect and dignity for once
I have written about this before but 'I DUNNO, CAN YOU?' is just bullying kids for speaking like everyone else. Literally no one says 'may i'.
I also just dont like asking for permission to do things im entitled to. If I gotta go to the can at work or im taking a break, I tell people, I dont ask. People ask me at work if they can go on break when they wanna take one, I know they're just making sure it's a good time to do so cause i'm the one who would know best whether we're about to get slammed or if we're approaching the end of a rush etc. It's also an ESL thing with the phrasing im sure, but part of that kinda makes it feel doubly bad where these phillipino guys twice my age are asking permission to take a break when im not even really their boss. My job just makes it seem that way, im the navigator, not the captain to use a ship metaphor. Anyway. I just repeat that they dont need my permission and to take their time. I'm not gonna debase myself so I can take a shit, to expect it is perverse and weird
