BTW, this is a juvenile, he will be a lot larger and three times as heavy once he's fully grown in a few years. If he doesn't get euthanized before that happens, that is. People can't leave him alone and continue doing reckless shit like walking right up to him while carrying a baby and when that eventually leads to some idiot getting hurt, the seal will have to pay for that.

I've read a theory somewhere that Neil was abandoned by his mother at some point and has no other seals to hang around with, that's what's causing this behavior. So it's pretty unlikely he's gonna stop with this and he's probably gonna get more aggressive once the hormones kick in and yeah like you said problems will occur at some point, it's actually kind of sad, I don't think Neil has a bright future unless some sanctuary takes him in or something.

I've also seen people interpret his vandalism as practice for future fights against other bulls. He does show the typical rear up and smash down with your upper body movements you see when they battle. Does a number on all kinds of structures already.

Finding a sanctuary for an adult male southern elephant seal is gonna be ... difficult to say the least. That's not even getting into the question if it's ok to keep an absolutely enormous, highly social yet very territorial animal in captivity, especially when its feeding strategy is "drop into REM sleep in the middle of the ocean until you've circled down to a depth of 1500m and then hunt while ascending."

Elephant seals are amazing creatures, but they sure are weird as hell.
