I think it's their registrars doing, per their registrars docs it's still "recoverable" for 60 days or something after expiration date, but they can redirect DNS whenever they want
I tried to talk with the admin to take things over, they gave me some initial info on the costs that they pay but then went silent.
It also wasn't really a costs thing iirc, it was mostly burn out from dealing with tankies, trolls and bots (scammers, spammers and scrapers) on top of rising costs
