Because unfortunately it is actually one of the few paths everyone in the US has to training, education, and an actual hiring job. That was done on purpose.

Many years ago I was in a unit with a First Sergeant that had a small swastika tattoo on his hand. He had this before he enlisted sometime in the early/mid 90's. It did not disqualify him from enlistment.
Anything... and I mean, anything, that could disqualify a potential recruit can be "waivered" away if anybody in the process chooses.
