My (Jewish) zionist friend, who is optimistic in most other aspects of his life, believes that Israel must exist because he thinks nowhere else will be safe for Jewish people. It's an incredibly pessimistic view to have, and one that's arguably untrue now, depending on your definition of "safe".
On top of the strange belief that the place where you’re at risk of being bombed is somehow safer than say, New York City, it requires believing that Jewish people are fundamentally unable to coexist peacefully with others, which is what the fucking Nazis believed.
idk my definition of safe usually doesn’t involve ballistic missiles and drones and bomb shelters and red alerts but i guess that’s the zionist mentality
I mentioned that to him. Idk. We haven't talked about Israel in a few years because it upset him a lot last time.
I have to hope his opinion has changed, but I fear it has not. I think he's a naive Bernie-style "Netanyahu is the problem" type.
This has always been weird to me; Israel keeps talking about being surrounded by nations that want to kill them; wouldn't committing genocide and ethnic cleansing in a European country like Germany have been the smarter choice? Then they'd be surrounded by all the people who love and support them.
People have always said to put all your eggs into one basket and then antagonize everyone you see.
it's their Emotional Support Apartheid, it must exist to make them feel good.
