Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:
-
To learn about and discuss meaningful news, analysis and perspectives from around the world, with a focus on news outside the Anglosphere and beyond what is normally seen in corporate media (e.g. anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, Marxist, Indigenous, LGBTQ, people of colour).
-
To encourage community members to contribute commentary and for others to thoughtfully engage with this material.
-
To support healthy and good faith discussion as comrades, sharpening our analytical skills and helping one another better understand geopolitics.
We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.
Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:
The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.
-
Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.
-
Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.
-
Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.
-
Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.
-
Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.
-
Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.
-
Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
Reposting my previous comment on the topic since the article clearly points to Spain by having Pedro Sánchez on the picture:
I haven't seen anyone else talk about this, so I'll do it myself: there is an ongoing lawfare campaign against the PSOE (Partido Socialista Obrero Español) in Spain and Pedro Sánchez’s government coalition, which in my opinion stems from NATO being incapable of tolerating even the most lukewarm pushback from Pedro Sánchez. Let me preface this comment by saying that I’m not a socdem and in no way do I have any love for the socdem neoliberal bourgeois government currently ruling Spain.
On the 19th of May, the ex-president of Spain and former president of the PSOE Jose Luis Rodríguez Zapatero (from now on ZP, read “zetapé”, th-eh-tah-peh) was called by the anti-corruption prosecution as investigated for possible corruption through influence abuse and self-enrichment in the decision of a COVID rescue fund to airline Plus Ultra in 2021.
This is the first time in the history of our “democracy” that a former president has been formally investigated for corruption. We had a literal amnesty law for all fascists in 1977 after the fascist dictatorship thanks to which all fascist bureaucrats could stay encroached to their institutions, but apparently this time it’s too much.
To be clear: the trials still haven’t ended, and there’s no known veredict as to whether there’s been any corruption by ZP. I honestly do not care, in 2026 the correct assumption is that all bourgeois regime parties are overtly corrupted, and to anybody surprised by this corruption case, as we say, “I have a motorbike to sell to you” (meaning don’t be naive). The point is not whether there’s corruption or not in an ex-president’s influence on COVID funds for private companies, the point is where this comes from, when this is happening, and why it’s incredibly relevant.
When the 2021 adjudication of the funds took place, the far-right parties already started a series of lawsuits against it, which ended up being closed due to lack of evidence of corruption. The investigation, however, turned out to be secretly reopened in 2024 after a tip from France and Switzerland. The far-right points to this as evidence that this isn’t just a lawfare of their making, with which I sadly have to agree: this case of lawfare is coming from NATO, not from local right wing parties. This makes it a lot more serious. The magic word “Venezuela” was additionally invoked, since the airline had flights to Venezuela and some of the higher ups appear to be Venezuelan citizens. For those who don’t know, Venezuela has been demonized for over a decade in Spanish media, and the slightest protest has received extensive coverage, as well as the accusations of state repression, of poverty, etc, never uttering a word about the measurable effect of the sanctions. Being linked to Venezuela here amounts to being linked to Satan.
Spanish socdem-voters are used already to extensive politicized use of the “justice” system by the right wing, opening all sorts of lawsuits usually started by the infamous Abogados Cristianos (Christian Lawyers Foundation) or Manos Limpias (Clean Hands, a far-right lawfare syndicate), may Allah forgive me for the links to NATOpedia. However, socdem belief in the purity and sacrosanctity of European institutions severely supports the public legitimacy of this lawfare case.
The final nail in the coffin is the fact that, as was published by El País (traiditionally socdem-aligned bourgeois media), none other than the unholy Department for Homeland Security of the Zionist States of America was providing evidence to the judge, which the media happily reported as “EE UU ya intervino en las sospechas sobre las operaciones de blanqueo de fondos vinculadas a los regímenes de Venezuela, Rusia e Irán”. Now we have the DHS directly tossing supposed evidence of a link between ZP and the axis of evil, which unfortunately has big power among socdem voters after the demonization of these countries.
My point isn’t that this lawfare case is fabricated, that the evidence linking ZP to corruption is false, or that the DHS manufactured the evidence (though that wouldn’t be surprising in the slightest). My point is that if DHS has evidence about corruption from the PSOE and is releasing it 1 year before the upcoming general elections, they absolutely, definitely, undoubtedly have shit on the overtly zionist right wing opposition leaders, such as the PP president Alberto Núñez Feijoó who previously appeared in pictures on a yacht with famous Galician narc cartel leaders. Choosing not to release similar investigations and evidence against the others directly points to election interference.
The timing is no coincidence. The target is no coincidence as Pedro Sánchez has been the only EU leader to reject the 5% GDP expenditure in militarism and has recently returned from his trip to China to further economic and diplomatic relations between the two countries. NATO is so far down fascism that it will simply not tolerate the slightest, most lukewarm push against their genocidal agenda coming from a milquetoast Eurosocdem, and this level of interference in Spanish politics in such a publicly relevant and media-amplified corruption case is not to be taken lightly. This may very well be the final nail in the coffin ensuring the total victory of a far-right coalition in Spain in next year’s elections, which will have 0 intention of furthering relations with China and will condemn the country to plummeting with the rest of the EU and bring institutional Zionism to unprecedented heights.
