Back when I listened to FM radio for music because internet radio or streaming weren’t a thing yet, I could have sworn that local stations would all go to commercial at the same time. Like 95.7 and 96.5 are both oldies/classic rock but they purposely both go to commercial at the same time so you can’t just flip between them to avoid commercials.
There used to be FCC rules that prevented one company from owning more than one station in a town [one AM and one FM] These days, big companies like Clear Channel can own as many as they want. Guess which President thought that was a good idea? Hint, his initials were RR
I think there are only a few companies left in the entire US that run all FM channels, and its been taht way for a long time. Clearchannel and maybe two others, and they have dictatorial control over huge swathes of culture because they use their monopoly control to decide what music, talk radio, and news get airtime.
Reagan came in just as cable TV and other new technologies were getting big. The old Fairness Doctrine was created in the eraly days of broadcast, and he could pretend that it was outdated.
