Hiroyuki Kawasaki, a veteran anime writer behind many franchises, such as Mobile Suit Gundam, has passed away at the age of 60.

On Thursday, May 28, 2026, it was confirmed that Hiroyuki Kawasaki had recently passed away this year. His official time of death was Jan. 23, 2026, and it was publicly announced for the first time today.

An official cause of death for Kawasaki has yet to be announced. His death was revealed by fellow anime screenwriter Takao Koyama (Saint Seiya, Dragon Ball Z) on X (formerly Twitter). ……

Holy fuck. I wish I could say more but damn 60 feels so young for such a legend. Mech, and anime as a whole, would be in such a different place if not for Gundam.
