Smoke enemas were historically used in the 18th century as a resuscitation method for drowning victims.

There were tobacco smoke enema devices placed along beaches in case of drowning.

You think "How TF could people be that stupid? What circumstances lead to this?", but then think about RFK Jr. and it makes sense.

At least in the 18th we can recognize they were operating off of flawed, nonscientific theory (4 humours, miasma theory of disease). RFK Jr, however, does not have that excuse.
