Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:
-
To learn about and discuss meaningful news, analysis and perspectives from around the world, with a focus on news outside the Anglosphere and beyond what is normally seen in corporate media (e.g. anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, Marxist, Indigenous, LGBTQ, people of colour).
-
To encourage community members to contribute commentary and for others to thoughtfully engage with this material.
-
To support healthy and good faith discussion as comrades, sharpening our analytical skills and helping one another better understand geopolitics.
We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.
Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:
The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.
-
Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.
-
Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.
-
Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.
-
Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.
-
Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.
-
Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.
-
Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.
-
AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
Taiwan though?????
Edit: typical hexbear hypocrisy
Who is Taiwan's biggest trading partner?
Wtf is this Ass Ass Ass in comment
Cuba is not a part of the US
Taiwan is a part of China
You: these two are the same
Ah yes, why doesn't Hexbear condemn the Great Chinese Blockade of Taiwan that has suffocated the island for 70 years
As we all know China has used its clout in the UN to insure that any country that trades with Taiwan is immediately cut off from the global economy and subject to crippling sanctions
Hypocrisy is when I read something I don't like and don't have answers to
Cuba is a revolutionary state, where the people overthrew the American colonizers and mafiosos.
Taiwan doesn't even claim to be separate from China, they claim to be the rightful rulers of all China, and they're the losers of a civil war after they sided with the Japanese invaders and lost support of the people and then fled to Formosa and killed the indigenous people there to install a military junta.
Where is the hypocrisy, these are two very different states that should be treated very differently. One should be defended from colonization, the other should be abolished and reunited and decolonized.
You're getting your history mixed up.
You're mixing up the Chinese collaborationist government led by Wang Jingwei who led a party that was nominally KMT and Chiang Kai-shek who, despite his many flaws and overall reactionary politics, never once collaborated with the Japanese. One of his many faults involved dragging his feet because he felt the Communists were a higher priority. But this is very different from open collaboration.
"Formosa" is the colonial name from Portuguese colonizers. It's full name was "Ilha Formosa" which is Portuguese for "beautiful island." "Taiwan" is based on the names of one of the Indigenous Taiwanese peoples that more or less sounds like "Taiwan."
Hey, let me know when China keeps any shipments of food or fuel from reaching Taiwan
Or when China starts drone striking fishing boats in the Pacific or Atlantic
Typical db0 ignorance
There have been some territorial disputes between China's Coast Guard and Philippines fishing ships. China's Coast Guard sprays the fishing boats with pressurized water cannons.
I think this shows that China has much more restraint than the US, spraying fishing boats with water until they go away rather than blowing them up. The US creates a double standard by condemning China for protecting its territory, while at the same time the US indiscriminately murders fishing boat workers.

...even if Taiwan were in any way comparable to Cuba, what exactly is china currently doing to it that in any way compares to the decades of harsh sanctions America is enacting against Cuba? There is a legitimate humanitarian crisis in Cuba due to the oil blockade, while Taiwan is... Doing pretty well and not particularly suffering any interference from china?
I'm serious, what is China actually doing to Taiwan right now? Materially?
Trading with them. Providing revenue to Taiwanese businesses that own property on the mainland or contract businesses on the mainland (and vice versa). Enjoying some degree of mutual cultural exports.
Deterring a US military occupation of Taiwan.
It's honestly pretty surprising Taiwan hasn't decided to switch sides yet, considering how the US is floundering and that China would 100% treat them with kid gloves and undoubtedly leave Taiwan's ruling class in charge locally with special exemptions from having to follow mainland regulations, just to get the immense PR win of a peaceful and painless reunification.
the chinese liberals lost their civil war and fled to an island and did genocide (white terror).
that island had previously been occupied by imperial japan and some european powers.
if you think land back is good for anglo settler states like the US and Canada then you can be consistent and advocate for returning Formosa to whatever indigenous population remains, but that's not what dronies are doing when you advocate for the would-be nation-state of modern taiwan to maintain sovereignty.
you wouldn't support the american confederates taking over puerto rico and maintaining a holdout confederacy there, you shouldn't support the taiwanese government. And china-china has way more of a claim to Formosa from 200 years of the Qing dynasty than the united states has on any of its territories.
I know we'll all say there is no distinction and they're all fascists, but I think it makes a difference to point out to people that Chiang Kai Shek loved German fascism to the point that he brought over German generals to train his troops and started styling their uniforms after them. The KMT were not in any way, shape or form the "good guys" and broke every single ceasefire agreement made with communists (who wanted to work together to fight the Japanese) by slaughtering them without provocation every chance they got before they fled to Taiwan and did the same there.
The right side won the civil war.
Chiang had Japanese War Criminals, like people who actually started the Three Alls Policy of genociding entire regions on his advisory board.
What even is there in Taiwan that's so important to you??? Like you write this as if the mainland is going to put all the island inhabitants in a large blender and sell them as bubble tea or some shit.
Everything I see re Mainlanders' perceptions and sentiment re Taiwan is akin to a family who dearly misses an estranged sibling and the most common term for these Taiwanese siblings is 同胞 tongbao literally 'same womb'. If westerners spent even half a second speaking to Mainland Chinese people they'd see that they see them as kin, not as the enemy, and the PRC will do everything in its power to right the historical wrongs and bring Taiwanese compatriots back into the fold.
There is but one China in the world. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. The Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. The two sides of the Strait belong to one and the same China, and this is the real status quo across the Taiwan Strait. “Taiwan independence” and cross-Strait peace are as irreconcilable as fire and water. “Taiwan independence” separatist forces constitute the biggest destroyer of the status quo across the Strait and the biggest source of disruption to peace and stability in the region. To safeguard peace and stability across the Strait, one must firmly follow the one-China principle and stand against “Taiwan independence” separatist forces. Leaders and political figures from the overwhelming majority of countries in the international community have reaffirmed their commitment to the one-China principle through various ways. Facts show that opposing “Taiwan independence” separatism and supporting China’s reunification is where the arc of history bends and public opinion trends.
Exactly. Taiwan is a Chinese island. Cuba is part of Latin America, not the Anglosphere. Washington has no business meddling in either China's or Latin America's internal affairs.
This reads like a CCP press release lmao
Thank you for your loyalty citizen! +10000000 Chiangbux
That's because I copy/pasted PRC's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and I agree with it.
tagline
Lmfao when was Cuba ~~part of America~~ an American state
1898-1902
So england has a right to invade america then? Because we were once a vassal state? What about india?
Imperialism is imperialism.
Taiwan isn't a former vassal state, it was and, according to both the PRC and ROC, still is, a part of a single unified china. Taiwan (the republic of china) still lays claim to mainland china, and in fact iirc to land outside of PRC territory that the PRC conceded between the end of the civil war and today. So that's one difference.
More importantly though, China isn't currently blockading taiwan and threatening to kidnap their politicians or send in ground troops. Like, even if you think Cuba and Taiwan are exactly the same... The actual situation is, clearly, vastly different. Taiwan is one of the SEA tigers because China hasn't been waging economic warfare against them. Cuba is extremely poor because America has. Taiwan isn't currently undergoing rolling blackouts and an inability to respond to medical and other emergencies due to a worrying heightening of Chinese economic warfare against them. Cuba is. Xi Jinping has not said that he intends to kidnap senior figures within Taiwan. Trump has in fact said that about Cuban figures. Xi Jinping has also not threatened to invade Taiwan complete with moving forces into the region. Trump has done those things. I doubt many people here would be happy about china immiserating the Taiwanese people, destroying their economy, or threatening to remove their leaders and invade them militarily, but those things are not happening, even if you think it's only a matter of time before the big spoopy socialists do all of those things... They still aren't, and there's no really good reason to think they plan to.
We aren't complaining about the actions China is taking against Taiwan because, well, they aren't. If I am wrong I would love to hear what actual, provable, aggressive or violent actions China has taken against Taiwan that are even vaguely comparable to the American confrontation with Cuba. Until then you are just punching left because you take lazy propaganda from literal fascists at face value.
China does however operate an extraterritorial Torture Prison on Taiwan oh wait sorry that's Gitmo
Imperialism is when one faction in a civil war takes territory from another faction
What part of the Chinese civil war was imperialism?
The part where the Communists won.
You realize it was the "Taiwanese" who invaded Formosa after they lost the civil war and slaughtered the indigenous natives there right? Getting rid of the Taiwanese government is an act of decolonization, not colonization. Taiwan is a colonial outpost
England should invade the US it would be funny
i think that happened in the 1960s
his majesty's dawn
The union invading the confederacy was such terrible imperialism.
Words have meanings you know.
"Oh, so the allies were right to invade France then? Imperialism is imperialism."
The PRC government has consistently said they have no plans to invade Taiwan and wants to incentivize them to return to the fold through diplomatic and economic means, even if it takes 100 years. Invasion is a last resort if the United States decides to turn Taiwan into a missile platform from which to attack China.
Yes the Brits do have a right, and a duty, to invade and depose the so-called "US" secessionist regime due to their genocide of the native population and global wars of aggression.
Its still so funny to me that the yanks are so evil the British Empire was the lesser satan in the Yank Rebellion
Imperialism is when a Rogue Province separated by fascist nationalists who refused to accept their defeat in the civil war, and turned the Island into a settler-colony by ethnically cleansing the indigenous population, and a US military outpost a few miles away from China, gets reunited with the rest of the country.
Huh?
The Chinese Confederacy? Yeah, I think it's time that settler-colony rejoins the mainland.
