Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:
-
To learn about and discuss meaningful news, analysis and perspectives from around the world, with a focus on news outside the Anglosphere and beyond what is normally seen in corporate media (e.g. anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, Marxist, Indigenous, LGBTQ, people of colour).
-
To encourage community members to contribute commentary and for others to thoughtfully engage with this material.
-
To support healthy and good faith discussion as comrades, sharpening our analytical skills and helping one another better understand geopolitics.
We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.
Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:
The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.
-
Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.
-
Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.
-
Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.
-
Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.
-
Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.
-
Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.
-
American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.
-
Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.
-
AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
Lmfao when was Cuba ~~part of America~~ an American state
1898-1902
So england has a right to invade america then? Because we were once a vassal state? What about india?
Imperialism is imperialism.
Taiwan isn't a former vassal state, it was and, according to both the PRC and ROC, still is, a part of a single unified china. Taiwan (the republic of china) still lays claim to mainland china, and in fact iirc to land outside of PRC territory that the PRC conceded between the end of the civil war and today. So that's one difference.
More importantly though, China isn't currently blockading taiwan and threatening to kidnap their politicians or send in ground troops. Like, even if you think Cuba and Taiwan are exactly the same... The actual situation is, clearly, vastly different. Taiwan is one of the SEA tigers because China hasn't been waging economic warfare against them. Cuba is extremely poor because America has. Taiwan isn't currently undergoing rolling blackouts and an inability to respond to medical and other emergencies due to a worrying heightening of Chinese economic warfare against them. Cuba is. Xi Jinping has not said that he intends to kidnap senior figures within Taiwan. Trump has in fact said that about Cuban figures. Xi Jinping has also not threatened to invade Taiwan complete with moving forces into the region. Trump has done those things. I doubt many people here would be happy about china immiserating the Taiwanese people, destroying their economy, or threatening to remove their leaders and invade them militarily, but those things are not happening, even if you think it's only a matter of time before the big spoopy socialists do all of those things... They still aren't, and there's no really good reason to think they plan to.
We aren't complaining about the actions China is taking against Taiwan because, well, they aren't. If I am wrong I would love to hear what actual, provable, aggressive or violent actions China has taken against Taiwan that are even vaguely comparable to the American confrontation with Cuba. Until then you are just punching left because you take lazy propaganda from literal fascists at face value.
China does however operate an extraterritorial Torture Prison on Taiwan oh wait sorry that's Gitmo
Imperialism is when one faction in a civil war takes territory from another faction
What part of the Chinese civil war was imperialism?
The part where the Communists won.
The union invading the confederacy was such terrible imperialism.
Words have meanings you know.
England should invade the US it would be funny
i think that happened in the 1960s
his majesty's dawn
"Oh, so the allies were right to invade France then? Imperialism is imperialism."
You realize it was the "Taiwanese" who invaded Formosa after they lost the civil war and slaughtered the indigenous natives there right? Getting rid of the Taiwanese government is an act of decolonization, not colonization. Taiwan is a colonial outpost
Yes the Brits do have a right, and a duty, to invade and depose the so-called "US" secessionist regime due to their genocide of the native population and global wars of aggression.
Its still so funny to me that the yanks are so evil the British Empire was the lesser satan in the Yank Rebellion
The PRC government has consistently said they have no plans to invade Taiwan and wants to incentivize them to return to the fold through diplomatic and economic means, even if it takes 100 years. Invasion is a last resort if the United States decides to turn Taiwan into a missile platform from which to attack China.
Imperialism is when a Rogue Province separated by fascist nationalists who refused to accept their defeat in the civil war, and turned the Island into a settler-colony by ethnically cleansing the indigenous population, and a US military outpost a few miles away from China, gets reunited with the rest of the country.
