A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 19 2025
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

For Firefox users, there is media bias / propaganda / fact check plugin.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/media-bias-fact-check/
- Consider including the article’s mediabiasfactcheck.com/ link
That website is always big on emotions with little to no information. I don't know why people post it so often.
https://news.sky.com/story/irish-presidents-sister-detained-by-israel-aid-flotilla-organisers-say-13545572
This is satire right? This is the same sky news that, when the pissraeli hooligan thing happened in Amsterdam, posted a video of pissraeli hooligans chasing some locals with pipes, correctly identifying the assailants as pissraeli, and later changed the description to say that the assailants were the locals.
No I just grabbed a random UK link....
The weird blog OP linked is a paragraph with no details, that article has a lot more
If you don't like someone's link tho...
It's known as a "dick move" in my culture to not provide one.
You could have just don't this:
https://www.politico.eu/article/ireland-catherine-connolly-sister-detained-gaza-flotilla-israel/
So you post a link to Sky instead???
They were in international waters, not belonging to Israel. Israel illegally boarded their boats and took them captive.
It's not really surprising that Starmer has said nothing given his strong links to Israel.
Two thighs can be wrong at once.
I read it as he hadn't issued a statement about the British citizens on the flotilla who were also abducted. That seems like a PM thing to do.
The sister of the Irish president (you know, the sovereign country that exists outside the UK!) was only one person on board. They were off the coast of Cyprus, you know, a country that exists in Europe, and has nothing to do with Israel.
The article that you obviously didn't read, or the one that was linked after that, but decided to add your tuppence worth anyway, Mentions other people on board of the flotilla. I will quote one of the relevant bits for you. I will even bold some of it.
NOBODY in Ireland wants the UK (Especially in this context) to interfere with Irish politics. If you knew anything at all about the history of Ireland and the UK, and the ongoing mess in the North of Ireland, you might have been able to stop yourself sounding so obtuse about this. It also might have helped if you had read the article that people are specifically talking about in this thread.
Get the Brits out!
I would like to think I understand enough to believe it would be offensive if the UK stepped in to intervene on behalf of Ireland. Someone correct me if that is wrong.
The UK wasn't asked to intervene on behalf of Ireland, and it is very unlikely that they would be. The article specifically mentions that the Irish government have done fuck all too, other than condemn it. They are mostly forced to do that, as the majority of Ireland's population would be against this.
The article also mentions that there are British people on the flotilla that were also kidnapped/abducted in International waters, illegally, by Israel, and Starmer hasn't even condemned it. He has said or done nothing about it.
The only reason Ireland is linked, is because one of the people taken, has a famous (in Ireland) sister, who happens to be President, (which is not the head of government in Ireland). There are many more nationalities on board the flotilla.
At least I have an understanding of what actually happened by reading that article. The one in the OP didn't recount what happened at all beyond summarizing the entire thing as an abduction.
After getting some relevant details, such as the boarding taking place in international waters, the article actually had some value.
Hahahahahaha
Yeah I'm not British but, thanks to Future of the Left, I know Sky News to be a "hysterical gung-ho Technicolor crapfest" lol
There's been times it's created articles based on pure theory and conjecture. It was claiming a while ago that TPUSA was deploying blackshirts in the UK when in reality it was just a bunch of Holiness Christians in trackies having a demonstration in SoHo with no relation or connection to TPUSA
The thing most people don’t bother to learn about TPUSA, is that the organization is focused on indoctrination of Christian-Right ideology in schools. They want schools to have a charter to promote their fucked up beliefs. At one point (I don’t know what was made of it) the Oklahoma school superintendent claimed TPUSA charters were something their students (or maybe the parents) wanted and that he would mandate across the state all high school’s have a charter.
I'm talking about the UK. We already have state religion anyway and schools generally have had mandatory religious education and Christian worship during assemblies. We don't have the same constitutional idea of separation of "Church and State" that the USA is supposed to have, moreso a separation of State and Government. So supporting something like this would just be a simple conservative position rather than something radical
Unlike the UK's fake religion that everyone knows is fake and is only kept around because without it the monarchy has no legitimacy (also a fake antiquated thing but whatever), American evangelicals actually believe in the evil shit that their religion promotes and endorses them to do.
Or are you saying that killing witches and executing gay people never stopped being mainstream in the UK?
Generally Christians do actually believe in their religion. Christianity doesn't promote "evil shit". It definitely doesn't promote executing people.
Yeah, it's just always set off my Spidey tingles.
Even if well intentioned, it's shitty journalism
I always imagine these sites have a couple people going over the text and they all want to prove their worth coloring the wording. There's no one there to dial it back down so that's how you end with with this
Because you’re on Lemmy…
