I've never met a serious person who puts any value in the 'you go x direction as you age.' like no one with critical thinking skills actually believes age correlates directly with political slant. Its a dozen and one other variables before your age plays into it.
People only say it because they want to call you a kid while sounding educated.
There is, I think, something to the idea that in prior generations, certain people could much more easily accumulate capital (eg owning a home, having investments) which would tend to result in them having petit-bourgeois political views as they aged.
Yes, there are material reasons and they end up generally aligning with their own class interests
communist parties in my area are all filled with middle aged and elderly people, reasonably enough
