Press freedom advocates on Tuesday forcefully condemned the Republican-dominated Federal Communications Commission—and FCC Chair Brendan Carr in particular—for moving to challenge Disney-owned ABC’s broadcast licenses as President Donald Trump again pressures to network to fire late-night television host Jimmy Kimmel.

“The First Amendment and the FCC’s mandate do not permit the agency to use broadcast licenses as weapons to punish broadcasters for constitutionally protected content they air,” declared Freedom of the Press Foundation chief of advocacy Seth Stern.

I, for one, would like to thank the Republicans and Trump.

Theyre setting all kinds of precedents that will be used against them full throttle the moment theyre no longer in power. Truly a gift.

I’d like you to meet the Democratic Party. They’ve said they appreciate your enthusiasm, but they’re going to “take the high road” and hope that they can just leave things as they are and pray things don’t get even worse when they lose next time.

[-] Makhno@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago

Dont worry, when SCOTUS overturns Loving vs Virginia, dems will stand on the Capitol steps and sing kumbaya and ask us to all come together

[-] 2piradians@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I'm hopeful there may even be republican dissent for all the overstepping. I think there are still plenty of traditional, small government types who are looking out for number one by faking support while privately being under duress.

If that's true, it may embolden the equally cowardly dems to finally take appropriate action. One can hope, anyway.

Ever the optimist. Republicans grumble about other Republicans, they don't do anything about them. Republicans don't have principles, they have talking points and disdain for their neighbours. They don't have morals, they have self-righteousness.

Keep dreaming, first you would need a Democrat with a spine. Then you would need a Democrat house and senate that wouldn't care about Republican feelings. Not happening

[-] 4am@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 day ago

Who said anything about democrats?

😁

[-] osanna@lemmy.vg 0 points 22 hours ago

ain't gone happen.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

LOL, yeah, right.

Assuming Democrats take power of every branch of government. They absolutely will not do anything like this against even the most vile of Republicans spreading hateful speech, up to and including those that engage in stochastic terrorism.

[-] Carmakazi@piefed.social 9 points 1 day ago
  1. The framework of government will be in such tatters by that time, rules and norms probably won't matter at all. They intend to rule indefinitely, and in the best case, the midterms are the inflection point of whether they decide to stand 10 toes on fascism or craft a just-in-case exit strategy where they aren't imprisoned or executed for what they've done.
  2. Democrats have never met Republicans at their gutter level and I wouldn't expect that to change even if #1 isn't the case.
[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Exactly. This dumbfuck nation keeps giving only a modicum of power to the Democrats anyway. And even if they do get a majority, good luck on trying to overturn something like the now-very-much-abused presidential pardons...

Democrats are going to honor pardon abuse even if it makes zero fucking sense. If they were anything like Republicans, they would have the perps arrested ANYWAY and then let it wind its way through the courts much later. When it comes to people like the J6 terrorists, they should absolutely do this, by the way.

Good luck on getting the Democrats to do anything about pardon abuse.

[-] Auli@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago

Good luck to get them to do anything.

They always forget that their weapons are two edged swords that can be wielded against them, too.

Except they don't know how to wield them in the first place. They just thrash around.

[-] Jhex@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

LOL oh my sweet summer child... your naivete thinking they will ever give up power is so sweet

[-] Crystalbound@lemmy.world -4 points 1 day ago

The paranoia is cute and all, little one. But I prefer not to live like the world is crashing down when its entirely out of my control.

[-] Jhex@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

So you prefer to put your head in the sand? good for you... no wonder your country is crumbling around you

PS: it really cannot be "paranoia" when you are admitting it is actually happening but you think it's out of your control...

[-] NekoKoneko@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I'll just add to this thread: Being naive is a problem, sure. But dooming and refusing to be optimistic about the possibilities for the future plays into fascists' hands, because we limit our imagination to whatever worst-case we expect, growing resigned in advance to their moves.

The only way out of this is to keep demanding a fair and just world - including through our expectations - while also preparing for the other side to do everything possible to derail it.

[-] northface@lemmy.ml 2 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

You have a point regarding mindset, but I would encourage people to stop hoping for change. Be the change you are hoping for - help each other to survive in a world where we can't rely on goverment support.

Start mutual aid networks, reach out to peers and strangers alike, share resources/skills/knowledge, learn how to set up mesh networks/use amateur radio gear for communication, build sustainable shops where actual useful stuff is produced, etc.

Have plans for how to reach your community quickly in different kind of emergencies.

Look at how organizations in countries that are further ahead when it comes to living under fascist rule have survived and built their networks. You're not alone, people have had to deal with and live under way way worse conditions than you and got stories/strategies to tell.

I'm not saying you need to build some kind of militia or go off grid. But this kind of infrastructure can be used regardless of how the future pans out where you live. It can be used right now, by and for those that lack the resources that others have, and has been left out in the cold by their government.

Best case scenario: Politics change to the better and you now have a strong, well-organized community that can put pressure on local politicians to keep it that way.

Worst case scenario: Regardless of politics, you and others have the means to keep on living through your community, and the amount of leverage the fascists have on your community has been reduced.
