I think going bald was an improvement for him. Compare and contrast the above picture with this one from I, Claudius in 1976 to see what I mean.

I'm not sure if it was for TNG but he came into some audition with a wig and they told him to take it off.

That's a wig, though. I remember him telling during an interview that he was 19 when he lost his hair.
