what the damn kind of metric is "23 tons of cash"
The highest denomination is 100 yuan, about $17. There are stories of aunties who had literal whole apartments stacked floor to ceiling with boxes of banknotes from running(for example) an aluminum recycling business in the reform and opening up days. A staple of "China foreigner" photos used to be flashing a big gangster roll of five figures of yuan which wasn't really that much, a few thousand bucks but sure looked like it. China invented paper money and they'll be the first to eliminate it. Alipay and Wechat are payments for everything now. It's getting harder and harder to use cash. People will take it but sometimes can't give change except if they transfer it to you on your phone. It's eliminated pickpockets though.
it was all in 1-mao coins
1 fen coins. They had those way back when. light as a feather and 1/100 of a yuan. One mao is1/10. I still have some left from my coin jar, trying to use them up buying bread in the next few weeks.
i think i got those as change by accident years ago (but still long after they were discontinued). feels like plastic or aluminium.
the 1-mao and 5-mao notes are still around and pretty beautiful too
One of my goals was to go to every location on every bill and get my photo taken, holding the bill.
I got the 100 in Beijing and the 1 in Hangzhou westlake but never the others. Maybe I will still, even though cash is 98% obsolete by now.
Is it the 5 or 10 that has Yangshuo? I got that one
I tried and failed a couple of times (personal reasons) to go to Huangshan (which iirc is the 5 or 10 that Yangshuo isn't)
