he must be getting some truly hilarious outcome projections for ground ops, infinite casualties
I'm so curious to see it happen. Stupid Gallipoli would be the most important naval battle in history because it would erase the idea of warships.
Gallipoli was already stupid, Operation Even Stupider Gallipoli would be fantastic
As in, because they're just big slow missile targets?
Big slow drone swarm targets. Ukraine already showed the prototype for a real 21st century naval war in its drone attacks on Russian ships, but the Russian navy has been considered a joke for over a century. The US Navy claims to be the best of the best and its carrier groups are at the forefront of screening doctrine. If they lose multiple ships in some humiliating way, there's no point in investing in similar ships to counter them.
If this becomes a naval invasion and especially a ground war, I think we're going to see a future where the best strategy is like nuclear deterrence was in the 20th century. All you need is a mountain you can dig a big hole under and as many drones/missiles as you can fit in it. Iran is still achieving a regional blockade and economically undermining the US at an existential level just by firing a few shots per day. You can't bomb or raid the mountain, but as long as it exists anything within range of it is under siege for a fraction of the cost to counter it.
