So what happens if/when Iran actually developed a nuclear weapon? Do they just announce they have them and then test it out in the desert to make the US shit bricks and bug the fuck out? Do they just show them off and not set any off? I feel like, showing them off only, will make the west just claim they are fake? If they test one the US might claim it's escalation and justification for using their own nukes? Do we think this will cause Isn'treal to just go suicide mode and launch their nukes? What are your thoughts comrades?

What could they do with a nuke that they aren't already doing?

depends how the war ends tbh. if the us declares victory and pulls out, it may be in iran's best interest to get nukes to deter them from regrouping and coming back with a better plan. then again, i've recently had it pointed out to me that if the mossad catches wind that iran actually does have a nuclear program, israel may decide to strike before they get it working.

I don't think the US gets to unilaterally decide when this war ends anymore. Iran gets a vote on when this war ends, if the US declares victory and all the ships sail home, nothing stops Iran from continuing to hit targets in the Strait and hit regional US assets.

A nuke over Jerusalem is much bigger than 4 ballistic missiles

[-] Malkhodr@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 3 hours ago

That would contaminate Palestinian land and have a yield that would spread to east Jerusalem.

[-] Commiejones@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 2 hours ago

but that wouldn't make things better for anyone. They are winning. Why would they change anything?

[-] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 4 hours ago

I dont think you have to show them, i think keeping some plausible deniability works too but Iran blundered by signign that agreement allowimg foreign inspectors in their facilities.

You don’t have to show or tell, but, based of past cases, you detonate one underground, which will be detected by several detectors by several countries, and it will become known.

Do they just show them off and not set any off?

They could say something about the bomb that only people who know it works would know too, although as we're dealing with the west it's probably better to just use one on a carrier on the ocean otherwise they'll think they can use nukes and still win.

[-] Commiejones@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 3 hours ago

Anyone with access to Wikipedia can tell you how a nuclear bomb works. It is a engineering question that was figured out 80 years ago. Its not rocket science.

[-] Marat@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 3 hours ago

Tbf rocket science is also an engineering question that was figured out 80 years ago

[-] Commiejones@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 2 hours ago

The upper limit on how far/fast you can make a rocket go is undefined. The upper limit of "can you use nuclear fission to cause mass destruction?" is "yes."

[-] Malkhodr@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 5 hours ago

I think it's safer to just test it out in a bunker and declare they've made one. Using a nuclear weapon on a target, even if it's in combat, may open the door for retaliatory nuclear strikes from the US.

The power of a nuke is in its deterrence not its actual effective use.
