Is this as gross as it seems, or does the word have a more innocuous meaning in this context?
It's the clothing style in the pictures, that kind of anachronistic faux victorian fashion with frills, corsets, and lace cut in a sort of sleeker and more modern way, as I understand it.

It's the name of the fashion style. Yes it's because of the book and yes it's pretty weird and gross but the name stuck and that's what the style has been called for decades now.
