Let's have a bit of real talk here.

Why were flying cars a failure? Because on the ground, if something goes wrong, you can just stop. Pull over and stop. In the air, you have to have a trained pilot to handle problems and even then people still do occasionally die. So flying cars were never going to be a thing.

Self-driving cars, however, just requires time and research. We will get there, it's just early. The tech is not ready for prime time yet. But it will eventually be.

And in fact, to wrap it back around to flying cars: At some point, we will have self-flying transportation of some sort.

Once the safety improves to something like 10x that of humans driving/piloting, it'll all be self-driving.

We're just not there yet.

We're getting there in spite of whatever the fuck it is Tesla is doing.

Flying cars are a failure because everything that is bad about cars gets much worse when you try to make them fly.

Flying cars are a failure because they're inefficient.

Trying to get computers to navigate roads is also inefficient. Future transport will be on rails.

Will the rails go past every single building?

[-] Hazel@piefed.blahaj.zone 0 points 1 day ago

No because most of us can walk?

I'm quite serious. It's pretty sad how much of society, including people like you, are so dismissive of people with mobility issues. There are many more than you seem to think.

I'm not dismissive of people with mobility issues, hence it's a straw man. Transit just doesn't need to stop at every single building in order to be accessible because most people can take a short walk. We have much better ways of making transit accessible for those who can't, like inclusive pedestrian infrastructure which can also be used by wheelchair users or mobility scooters.

Oh please, private small planes, with licenced pilots crash about once a month.

[-] daychilde@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

And that has what to do with anything I said?

Happened to Inhofe so many times I'm surprised he died of old age
