only if you believe Russia was a positive force once in its history.

I don't, but they had a chance to change for the better when the Russian Federation was formed. And for a while it looked like they would, until Putin completely ruined it.

He always appealed to the masses. It’s not like he’s Darth Vader who pushes his will on others. He mostly does what’s popular and appeals to their masses. The Russian masses enjoy all that, that’s the Russia they built. Not mysterious one man who controls over a hundred million of people. Don’t strip them of their responsibilities.

They did had a chance indeed, but instead of giving them help, the west could have helped exactly the oppressed nations. Instead, we’ve got chicken Kiev speech.
