The secret camera glasses for creeps that everyone said 'men will use this to take creepy secret pictures of people?' is getting used to take secret pictures for creeps? I think this is obviously just misusing this vital technology which we must have, and that's why we're 'inventing' it again even though last time failed because everyone wearing them got punched for secretly recording creepy pictures.
The glasses unfortunately do have cool uses for disabled people. There's a lot of research going on at a university near me about implementing LLMs and vision AI into them to provide the likes of real time subtitles for the hearing impaired and realtime environment description for the visually impaired. They absolutely should be regulated into the ground in their current iteration as creep glasses though.
i remember seeing a post on lemmy about a Chinese company that was making translator glasses, like you could look at writing and it would translate it for you like the google translate phone app but quicker and in your glasses, it also did speech if i remember correctly, was very cool
It's such a shame that capitalism bastardises such useful technology and turns people against it like LLMs and these glasses.
Someone on here once suggested that the Internet in a communist world would be life affirming, powerful, and useful and it ruined my fucking day
The terrible truth
Another ethical use would be recording cops and ICE on the sly
Unlike being a sexpest, I imagine this is actually something Meta would ban the device's users from doing.
I know a local ice watcher that has been using them, so far no ban. Although I wouldn't doubt Meta will work with ice/cops when it comes to prosecution
Fuck, real life subtitles would be so useful
I wear glasses with basically one of the lightest prescriptions you can possibly get because it started to affect my work, and I gotta say, real time subtitles in my lenses would be fuckin rad
Are you staring at my chest?
It's subtitles I swear!
No, I'm looking below them because Mark Zuckerberg told me that they could see subtitties.
my subtitles are up here
Me glancing:
Glasses subtitles: bouncing
This is what really bugs me with technology like this. I have some memory issues where I can't immediately recall details sometimes, so forget things like names. Something like these glasses with a non shitty version of Facebook would be amazing for me.
Imagine walking down the street and seeing someone you know, and a little window pops up with some relevant information that they've chosen to share with you. It could have their name and a few lines of other information, like saying that their birthday is a few days away, or their kid's and partner's names.
Instead we've got the shittiest version possible where they just suck in as much data as possible to sell to other shitty companies 😤
I also have memory issues leading to me forgetting names and that sounds like an invasive, inhuman, and awkward way to live.
No on cares if you forget their name. But if you start bringing up shit that they posted about on Facebook it’s going to get awkward.
Well, yeah, if you talk to someone like they're a stranger it's going to sound awkward. I already know my friend's names and details about their families, because we're friends. I'm not thinking of approaching random people in the street and spouting private details of their lives..
The reason I said that it would have information that they chose to share is for precisely that - they've actively chosen to share that information with you in particular. An actual conversation between friends would be more like
Much more organic when you have an actual conversation with a friend and don't just randomly spout facts at someone 👍
