Honestly it's a question of how much time you've got. You could connect the dots back to Nixon, you could go back to failed reconstruction, you could go back to African slavery starting at all in America, or if you have time to kill you could connect the dots all the way back to Constantine. I don't think we should try. Many evil people do many evil things and they tend to work together when their goals happen to align. Convenient but false ideas are how fascism and a lot of other bad things perpetuate, so I try to avoid those.
