Chinese propaganda is rampant on the fediverse. We need to discuss ways to combat this. One group- memes or something is wholly controlled by Chinese state actors. What do you think?

I’m no fan of Tankies or the CCP, but I’m really not seeing any more pro-china propaganda than you see elsewhere, mostly excitement as a result of their green tech stuff or HSR (while ignoring why China has a need for HSR)

Someone once told me China has such a robust rail system so that they can move their nations worth of prisoners around. I think this is what this user is implying, but I really don't quite know.

Hey, can anyone tell me why the 3rd largest country by land area and 2nd largest by population needs high speed rail?

[-] JayTreeman@hexbear.net 36 points 3 months ago

After you hear why please talk to the Canadian government

It's a secret and nefarious reason, that's why it must be left unsaid! Just know it's not for the godly purposes that white people use rail for.

Yeah like what the fuck? can someone with an account tell this person that the U.S. has, and has had for decades, the world's largest prison population both in absolute numbers as well as proportion of the population

The duplicitous mind of the USAian can only have room for thinking of their next crime.

[-] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 20 points 3 months ago

Doesn't Honduras have a higher incarceration rate? Last time I checked in Wikipedia it said Honduras and Cuba are higher by their rates. (obviously taking the Cuba one with a pinch of salt because the source is a Western NGO)

[-] Wheaties@hexbear.net 26 points 3 months ago

The last breakdown I saw, only El Salvador had an incarceration rate to rival the US. It even broke down the union and listed each state individually, so the top thirty incarcerates were all US states, then El Salvador, then the rest of the US states and only then did other countries start appearing on the list.

US used to be the highest, I believe it peaked in the early 2000s? As soon as they took the gas out of the "War on Drugs" machine it really plateau'd

[-] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 26 points 3 months ago

Much like capital grows until its own contradictions push it outward to the imperial periphery, it seems the war on drugs met a critical point where it could only survive by expanding to LatAm and transforming into the avatars of neoliberalism like Bukele. But also the recent excursion against Venezuela was justified using "war on drugs" rhetoric.

The punitive justice programs of dead generation weigh on the brains of the living like nightmares.

Empire of Borders gives some insight into this, that's around the same time that border policing transformed into a series of South-facing borders trained up by US immigration enforcement and build by US security contractors.

The war on drugs is also a series of South-facing enforcement operations, operated in close connection with the US.

[-] purpleworm@hexbear.net 16 points 3 months ago

As of very recently it appears to be El Salvador by a large margin, but America literally exported prisoners there.

[-] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 13 points 3 months ago

That would be news to me so idk

[-] Frogmanfromlake@hexbear.net 12 points 3 months ago

Turkmenistan and Rwanda also have higher rates according to Wikipedia.

[-] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 34 points 3 months ago

moving your people around a lot is bad for the environment. that's why, in the US, we lock up as many as we can in prisons and concentration campus before killing them and dumping their bodies in unmarked graves.

because its better for the environment.
