Wasn't there guy who did this in the 70's, then he terrorize the people who homes he spent years breaking into and stealing stuff. Literally some people thought he was a ghost.

Also some Japanese WW2 holdouts that did this but on small islands. They never got the order that the war was over and they were to stand down :(
