I never associate "Ad hominem", "whataboutism", etc to magic words but it's exactly how people see it. They use it and boom they win the argument.
they hear or read the words but don't learn the concepts, or are downstream of a bunch of people who used it wrong.
and i say wrong here because they were trying to say something else and failed to say what they meant, not out of prescriptivism.
