It's literally just the plot of the movie. Environmentalism and knowledge of climate change aren't new things now and they weren't new 25 years ago.

Um, much further back than that. Eco terrorism was a big theme of the 1975 novel "The Monkey Wrench Gang", for example. Oil companies knew about global warming decades ago.
