Today I watched:
Bloom Into You episode 3
It was decent but I'm maybe not that excited to return to it. I think this is another case of being good but having stiff competition, and maybe just me having a negative bias due to it being Yet Another high school show.
I'm in Love With the Villainess episode 1
This was decently entertaining but also sort of middle of the road. I do love me a good ojousama laugh, but I'm gonna file this one with 'Tis Time for Torture, Princess where one episode kinda seems like all I need, or, "How are they gonna stretch this premise out to twelve episodes?"
Hidamari Sketch x Honeycomb episode 1
The style seems a little different from the previous seasons in a way that I'm not too sure that I like. Otherwise, it's more Hidamari, and I do enjoy my Hidamari. Continuing this one I think will be a priority for me just because it's something I already have some relationship to.
Revolutionary Girl Utena episode 1
This was pretty cool! At this point I honestly just have to commit to watching this classic — it is pride month, after all!
Sailor Moon episode 40
Just six more episodes left, crazy to think that I started this show nearly five years ago and only just now have committed to finishing it.
Macross: Do You Remember Love?
This movie was the standout hit of the day, I think. Great aesthetic, the runtime made me gulp but it honestly did go by pretty quickly. It's a fun premise and I think a good introduction to the ever-popular Macross series. A random background character gets decapitated at one point which felt kind of unnecessary because otherwise it didn't really have any gore that I could remember.
I was pretty sleepy for much of the movie, though. At one point I actually went into my laptop's display settings and turned the display orientation to "portrait" just so I could lay on my side with one eye open... Not because it's a boring movie, obviously, but just because I was feeling kind of tired.
The I'm in Love with the Villainess anime barely manages to get halfway through the Revolution arc. It doesn't get to Claire being radicalized and instantly becoming a better person than Rae, the "this is explicitly and textually a trans allegory" character's story, or the actual revolution part of the story. Looking back at the anime I'm realizing how much literally nothing happens for almost all of the season, and IIRC it even cut out the bits of Rae explicitly talking about homophobia and self-critting over what a creep she's being. If they'd paced it better they could have easily covered the first two books in one season imo.
Despite my criticisms of the series I still wish they'd get a second season to at least finish that first major arc with. Also I still need to read the other 3 novels.
Very interesting...
I recommend the LNs more than the anime tbh. The worst thing I can say about them is that they're ultimately just a wish-fulfillment isekai except lesbian this time and despite being self-aware and class-conscious they don't go far enough with it.
