trying to explain the difference between an aussie sausage sizzle and a hot dog to an american friend. What would be the closest equivalent?
Hot dogs are boiled. Sausage sizzles are 'broiled'. One little consonant makes a mighty difference to the end result.
Sausages are just very fine mince with added fillers so I'd say pureed hamburger patty mince.
Grilled dogs vs boiled ones.
In Canada hot dog stands do both!! Dogs are first steamed (does most of the cooking) then grilled for that charred goodness.
