Hey, you can still buy a used Wii, install WiiFlow, put a metric shitton of games in the SD card and go nuts. Did it recently (I'm nearly 40, with wife and 4yo kid), highly recommend.
You don't even have to get a divorce with it if you're not feeling it.
Even better you can install RiConnect24 and play mario kart online.

Btw, is there anything to let you play gamecube games without the gc controller on a wii?
I have no idea, sorry, but you should be able to connect GC controllers to the Wii. I think.
