Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:
-
To learn about and discuss meaningful news, analysis and perspectives from around the world, with a focus on news outside the Anglosphere and beyond what is normally seen in corporate media (e.g. anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, Marxist, Indigenous, LGBTQ, people of colour).
-
To encourage community members to contribute commentary and for others to thoughtfully engage with this material.
-
To support healthy and good faith discussion as comrades, sharpening our analytical skills and helping one another better understand geopolitics.
We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.
Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:
The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.
-
Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.
-
Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.
-
Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.
-
Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.
-
Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.
-
Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.
-
American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.
-
Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.
-
AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
Protesting does nothing. Do something more you damn libs!
Just based on the numbers, it seems like there would be a solution that would, historically, be enacted by the large group of people against the lone, evil, tyrant.
Oh well. Fun Sunday, see you at brunch tomorrow, we really made the world a better place today.
I am of similar opinion, but not so harsh - what would you suggest they do?
At a minimum? burn the house down.
What's stopping you from going and doing it?
I just don't think it's fair to scorn liberals for attempting to do something, then suggesting something you realistically wouldn't do yourself.
Realistically their options are to bombard ICE inboxes, blockade the house, maybe get away with some vandalism, but I don't think you can realistically expect people to burn a senior government official's house down - as much as it may be deserved.
Well, true, but that's an enormous hypothetical, and not really a realistic course of action. Even in that hypothetical, if a mob of 1000 people started firebombing government officials house, the police and then the national guard would deploy and start shooting. And who begins the raid? There needs to be someone to make the first move, without surefire knowing that 1000 people are about to back them up.
Next time you're at a protest see how you feel about throwing a Molotov - let alone throwing one at a government official. I've been in crowds where people have done so little as lobbing bottles, and that crowd immediately got kettled by armed and mounted police, and the people who threw it got singled out, dragged out, and put in the van.
Militancy happens when people's lives are made utterly miserable. That's why militancy happens in exploited countries. That's why trade unionists and anti racist groups were militant in the 20s-70's in America, but not anymore. The conditions don't necessitate it right now, and it's not yet a rational response to risk your life. It seems like those conditions will come back, but it hasn't happened yet. If that time had come already, we wouldn't be having this conversation.
idk i think the crowd of 1000 is the bigger ask, if you've already got the numbers might as well do the cool thing
Paint bomb ICE windshields if you see them. Gives more time to gather crowds at attempted abductions.
An Ocean is stopping me. Don't tell me what I would and wouldn't do. What about you? What's stopping you?
If you're willing to sacrifice everything and end up in prison in the US for a long time, a one way flight is no barrier. If I were to get an 'on-the-day' flight, it could cost me less than $400, which is not a hard sum to make if you don't plan on having any future commitments or a need to save up. Its an ocean between me and the US too, but it's not the ocean that's stopping me, it's the fact that I am not willing to ruin my life for a cause that would forget me in no time at all. That's the case for you too. Stop larping.
I have talked to a lot of people who are, perhaps not by their own words, but to some degree of self admitting, they are basically one financial hardship away from having nothing to lose. They might also be struggling with alienation of daily life working pointless jobs. Some people know that, statistically speaking, the financial mishap is coming, that the current regime is actively removing safety nets. Some people may want to reclaim some autonomy in their lives and get ahead of the bleak future. Some people already have nothing to lose.
For somebody in such a situation, in mainstream populism in the US, Luigi sits at the right side of the throne, and the left side is an open seat. It's perhaps delusional to think someone could successfully pull off an act that would earn you the left seat in the court of public opinion, but people have gone to prison for dumber reasons. But there are a lot of people who are ready to commit a crime, they just lack knowledge of an opportunity to commit one.
Sure, but it's not happening yet. I think there's still some ways to go before adventurism years begin.
Okay, Good luck changing nothing then, bozo.
I will be over where I am, doing stuff in the meantime.
Big words coming from someone evidently not engaging in the acts of revolutionary terrorism that they advocate others to do...
