That makes sense, but it does give the impression that they only brigade.
Though, I can't think of a single time I have seen a hexbear user outside of hexbear on a non-political thread.
I see them usually on non-political Lemmy.ml threads, if you avoid them then that explains it. Hexbear keeps a small federation list to protect its marginalized users from harrassment, and also to carve out a uniquely Leftist space.
I thought hex originally federated with everyone, but when they started refederating they chose an allow-list. Am i wrong? I know that lemmy.world blocked them, which is where a lot of non-political content is.
Even in the beginning, federation was selective. Lemmy.world blocked Hex before Hex ever federated with .world, which is funny. There are different perspectives on Hex, some want broade federation, some want tighter, Hex's current federation strategy is the result of different votes over the years. What was chosen for refederation was the same as it was before.
In the past Hexbear used a fork of lemmy that didnt have federation, it wasnt until after the reddit migration we updated to the then version of lemmy with federation and we started with an allow list, then world block hexbear before federation
We had had an instance years before the reddit migration so we are used to use our local comms and are active there
