Yup, shame is a tool they wield to do horrible things to their own parishioners and others. At least in Christianity shame is a very important aspect of the religion.

"THINKING wrong will ETERNALLY DAMN YOU" is a great way to get people to repress themselves in horrifically damaging ways too.
