I was a long time lurker of r/cth and it was the only sane place I could go on Reddit to read shit that wasn’t saturated with racist memes about where I was born (China). Like I don’t even live there and haven’t for decades but fuck me is it wearying to see sOCiAl CrEDIt SCorE jokes on every fucking thread. Anyway I’m done with Reddit and was hanging around general lemmy instances and found y’all through the federation noise. I guess this post was kind of pointless but I’m just happy this community is still around.

Have you thought about traveling back and visiting China? I kinda like how the place is going. People are super cool and optimistic. The food is amazing, the markets are neat, she transportation is getting really good.

I might be wrong, but I thought that visas were much easier for people with Chinese parents.

I’ve been back a fair amount, not in the last couple of years though. Things took a turn when it became necessary to use WeChat for everything. I have Complicated TM feelings about China and one of the icky feeling things is “let’s make everyone use one app for all financial transactions and travel bookings and literally every fucking thing ever”. Back in the day you could just swan around with a wallet full of cash and have the most fun party-parrot-mask

It is more convenient… until you get your covid passport app yellow coded because the government knows you booked a train (that you never even took) to a city where there were 2 recorded cases (out of a population of 5 million), and you can’t enter any public buildings for a month (real thing that happened to a relative)

I am all for centralisation until I have to like. Actually trust any state
